So, you wanna get into the DCAU.

First, you must know what the DCAU is. It's the DC Animated Universe, which consists of all of the animated shows. For the purpose of streamlining the experience, I'll direct you to everything of note made since '98/'99. There is also the DC Animated Originals, things that don't, for some reason, get classified as DCAU, but are basically the same.

In chronological order of release, the shows are as follows:
  • Batman Beyond (1999–2001)
  • Static Shock (2000–2004)
  • The Zeta Project (2001–2002)
  • Justice League (2001–2004)
  • Justice League Unlimited (2004–2006)
The spin-off flims are:
  • Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
  • Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1998)
  • Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000)
  • Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003)
But the only one we're interested in is Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.

Batman Beyond isn't available online in completion or terrific quality, so you'll have to torrent it. It is by far my favourite. It's set in the DISTANT FUTURE of 2036 where Bruce is old at bitter (well, older and bitterer) and he can't Batman anymore, and some snarky, sarcastic, talkative street smart guy, Terry McGinnis, takes on the mantle and basically kicks ass all over the place.

Static9001 on Youtube has uploaded every episode of Static Shock released, and as the episodes have been up for over a year, I imagine they aren't going anywhere. Static Shock is about a chemical meltdown in Dakota, causing everyone within the area to gain super powers. Since it was a bad area, most people become villains, but Virgil Hawkins decides to be a superhero, Static Shock, with is boyfrand Ritchie Foley (who was based on actual gay character Rick Stone from the comics that this series was adapted from. So, you know, there's that.)

The Zeta Project was an offshoot of Batman Beyond, based on a robot character who was in one episode. Zeta then took on the holographic form of a human and he and a perky girl went around hiding from the government. It didn't last very long.

Justice League began with the conception of the league in the face of alien invaders in the episode Secret Origins, and continued from there. The league is composed of seven members, Superman, Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl. Later, in the followup series Justice League Unlimited, the team branched out to basically every superhero they could get the rights to and animate quick enough. Both of these are hard to find in completion online, too, so you'll have to torrent them as well.

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is a tie in film with Batman Beyond, and from the title, I bet you can guess the main character, main villain, and the main plot of the movie. Another addition to the Torrent list, I'm afraid.

In the Animated Original collection there is:
  • Superman Doomsday [2007]
  • Justice League: The New Frontier [2008]
  • Batman Gotham Knight [2008]
  • Wonder Woman [2009]
  • Green Lantern: First Flight [2009]
  • Superman/Batman: Public Enemies [2009]
  • Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths [2010]
  • Batman: Under the Red Hood [2010]
  • Superman/Batman: Apocalypse [2010]
  • All Star Superman [2011] [unreleased as of yet]
Superman Doomsday is an animated adaptation of the comic of the same name. It made me cry. It might make you cry. You will probably be able to find this movie in the 5 dollar bin at Walmart. I'm a little offended. Things you should note about this movie: Superman has a weird face, Lex Luthor wants him something fierce, Lois is now Mexican, and every voice actor is an exercise in Hey, It's That Guy.

Justice League: The New Frontier has absolutely nothing to do with the Justice League I talked about above. The animation is way different, the people involved are different, and it's basically just another origin story. It's still a pretty good watch, though. It's another "Hey, It's That Guy" scenario with David Boreanaz of all people voicing Hal Jordan, the white Green Lantern.

Batman Gotham Knight is similar to the Animatrix. They have a few different stories to different animation studios and told them to go nuts. This is also a bit of a bridger story between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. It can be watched as a stand alone, though. The absolute highlight of this is hilarious bishonen Bruce Wayne.

Wonder Woman. Ehn. Ehhhn. I haven't even finished this one. It's not terrific. Pretty to look at, I guess.

Green Lantern: First Flight is the origin story of Hal Jordan, the whitey Earthling Green Lantern. I was never really into Green Lantern, so I can hardly even remember if this movie is any good or not.

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies is an adaptation of the comic of the same name. Jeph Loeb wrote the comic and basically it's one big ode to how much they are boyfriends. He tries to write the comic as from both perspectives, making Kal and Bruce think in very similar patterns, but it really only serves to show how much they think about each other constantly. This is pretty much amazing. Lex Luthor is president, and brings down the banhammer on supers, and Superman is like "lol or not." and Lex is like "GIANT KRYPTONITE ASTEROID ALSO I AM RELIGIOUS" and Batman flies a rocket shaped like himself and Superman into space.

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths is loosely based on the huge fucking series of comics of the same name. In it, an Alternate reality Lex shows up and asks the League for help saving his world from the Evil Alterna Justice League. This movie is really good for explaining the  multi-verse theory that DC likes to tote around. Also, Superman is totally hardcore in this. Like the other Justice League movie, this one kind of does it's own thing and has little to do with the show or The New Frontier.

Batman: Under the Red Hood is the story of the second Robin, Jason Todd, who was unpopular with the fans, and in a brilliant move by DC, let readers decide his fate. Readers decided that the Joker should bash his skull in with a crowbar. But he got better. This movie in an exercise in kicking the dog. It basically oscillates between tragic woe and badassularity.

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is the sequel to Superman/Batman: Public enemies and is based on the comic Superman/Batman: Supergirl. Because of the total bomb that was Wonder Woman, they decided not to base the advertising campaign around the fact that this is a Supergirl origin story. Superman and Batman are having a bit of a lovers quarrel, but they get over it by the end and are boyfrands through and through. Supergirl flits between being a sue and being legitimately adorable. They completely fucked up the ending though. It isn't bad, it's just definitely not the comic.

All Star Superman is based on the comic of the same name and is being released later this year. I will cry.

MY NEW YEARS RESOLUTION

IF A FRIEND IS CONSTANTLY MAKING ME FEEL LIKE SHIT THEN IT IS TIME TO RE-EVALUATE THAT FRIENDSHIP AND ADJUST ACCORDINGLY. IT IS NOT WORTH IT TO HAVE SHITTY FRIENDS WHEN I HAVE GOOD FRIENDS. I FEEL LIKE SHIT ABOUT TOO MUCH OF MY LIFE TO PUT UP WITH IT FROM PEOPLE WHO I AM SUPPOSED TO LIKE.
